Blessed rain

The downpour yesterday and today is a welcome respite after suffering for months under the blistering hot weather. The searing heat has become very much an epidemic after being a mere nuinsance for so long. The water in dams around the west coast is pretty much drying up especially down south. Melaka is at the moment depending on extra input of water from the Muar river. Despite the dry spell afflicting us, there are some oblivious buffoons who continue to engage in open burning. Coupled with the natural forest fires happening, we have a big situation waiting to explode into catastrophic proportions. As of now, haze is blanketing many parts of the Klang Valley, Selangor, N.S. and even some parts of Melaka. (These are the places that i know of, anyway

As the rain continues its inundation, I hope that this rain will last...at least for a few hours. I hope the dry season has come to an end and please heavens, send forth those sprays of Evian, enough to cool us down but not hamper the lives of everyone.

Musings and Reviews

Read this on Sunday. A pleasant read but forgettable. It's a staple Sheldon novel, nothing much past the usual recipe of his writing.

Read this during Chinese New Year. Not too shabby, enjoyed it actually. The movie 'Secret Window' starring Johnny Depp was taken from here. Some of the stories seems illogical but I like the premise and I especially liked his build-up in 'The Langoliers' but towards the end the logic seems ridiculous, lol. "The Library Policemen" is very quirky and thrilling. It tells of the urban legend of Library Policemen who hunts for those that never return their library books on time. "The Sun Dog" is the worst among the 4, at least to me, due to its inconsistent pace and towards the middle of the story, it loses its steam.

I finished another novel too, " The Cult" yesterday. In a way, it opened my eyes and made me aware of all those brain-washing cults that is very much prevalent in our society, yes, even here in 3rd-World Malaysia. The cult in the story however focuses on Christianity so there would not be any Muslim connotations.

Religion and theology has always fascinated me. I've read a little and I intend to read up more on it when I have the books/articles available to me. I have also asked some Muslim friends regarding their religion and there are aspects of it that I find way out-of-line with modern civilisation. I will not write further here, lest I am accused of blasphemy, until I'm much more knowledgable.

That's all for today. : )

The aftermath

The crackers had been lit, money been spent on cards, Tupperware's of cookies/cakes/candies/ eaten up, and overall state of hygiene and somewhat less polished than that on the 9th of Feb. Yea... the full-blown celebration is pretty much over and school-going children had been dreading this day. It's back to the normal schedule as the wheels of life routines begins to crank.

I've enjoyed the past few days tremendously though I still wished they would last longer. :P I've met some relatives i've never met before, tried firecrackers I've never seen before to mention a few. There was the BBQ party, the reunion dinners/lunches, the chill-relax-gossip-talk sessions, firecracker bustin sessions, even some Vegas-Genting like casino action. I met my grandfather's two younger sisters. I was very honoured and humbled. They came to Malacca all the way from Kajang. Funnily, I didn't watch much tv this year during this festive season. I think it's the "packed" itinerary that I keep. Despite it all, I was grateful for the opportunity to spend some time with school friends. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend a class reunion party on Saturday night. It was also unfortunate that I wasn't able to meet up with some friends. And family.

Having said all that, these are just the thoughts that came out of my head. I'm very sleepy now. It's not very detailed, at least not as detailed as I would like, but it's somewhat the gist of the happenings during the past few days in Malacca alone. More to come on KL, etc, ... when I feel like it. :P Oh yea, btw, Malacca was dreadfully hot since Thursday ( perhaps even before). RAIN RAIN, where art thou!!!

However, not all is lost. The festive mood is still throbbing albeit with a little less vibrancy than the past few days but I hope this buoyant spirit keeps lifting us until we celebrate the coming of 2006. I still have some crackers left to be lit, a few remnants of CNY delicacies to tickle my tastebuds and I want to keep the friendship/family ties strong as ever. Happy Year of the Rooster!
