Batman Begins
Finally a Batman movie worth watching after Batman Returns. The first 2 instalments of this very famous hero franchise were truly classics. They captured the dark and gothic Gotham atmosphere, and also portray the caped crusader as a hero. The later ones, like the ones played by George Clooney, Val Kilmer were more like spoofs of the original Michael Keaton's Batman, lampooning Batman's intelligence and not to mention paint silly pictures of baddies in Gotham. You would think that the villains are adolescents having their first chance at criminal stardom with all the outrageously lurid costumes/makeup.
I digress. The movie was worth the RM8 (aren't they getting more expensive every year). They captured the birth of Batman pretty well, illustrating his sad childhood blessed with such opulence to his early trainings under the League of Shadows. Batman was finally unveiled, with the trademark bat-spotlights; albeit a more crude insignia of the bat, his gadgets and armour as well a vehicle which in my opinion, looked bulky and ugly. The cloth was one my favourite gadgets in the movie though. It supposedly hardens in to anything it is cut into when charged with electricity due to the reformation of molecules or some sort. This was to be his cape. Katie Holmes played a very minor character in this movie, and her role wasn't really fleshed out. We also see Gordon who rose as an ordinary policeman when Bruce was still a kid into an honest, and bribe-hating detective to a Lieutenant. If we follow the story further, he later rose to be Commisioner Gordon in the future Batman saga. The villain, Ra's Al Ghul, played by Liam Neeson who was his mentor during his League of Shadow days, wasn't much of a theatrical villain as Batman later ones, like the famous Joker and Two-Face. There wasn't much hero-villain clashes, as the movie rather concentrates on exploring the character of Bruce Wayne. His day-to-day figure takes precedence here.
All in all, this is a good movie. A good Batman movie in years. The general viewing is kinda strictly for Batman fans only or those knowledgable in Batman lore. The rest may just go and enjoy movie as it is but will feel rather short-changed.
