May 13, '69
I may not know much about May 13, but I definitely enjoy know about 69..i mean it's a lovely number..no no.. Anyway 1969 is an awesome year, not because I love 6s and 9s but it was also when the ominous May 13 event took place.
Much have been written on the subject and many different versions prevail. I've read up and though I do not consider myself knowledgeable enough to point fingers, but I think I have a fair share of what went on the many ramifications of that tumultuous date till today. I think I have a written piece on this somewhere but I will have to find it and edit it first. One thing that I do know is that it is always being used by the powers that be as a reminder for us to remain united and not backbite each other.
What is not apparent to most is the complex tapestry of events that triggered this incident. It plays out with such intrigue and drama that it would surely be an awesome plot worthy of an Oscar for best picture or a Nobel prize for literature. Scandals, character assassinations, diversions, royalties...heck, my mouth is watering from the wealth of plot to be gleaned. But again, I am no big authority and I've only read up from various sources and have my own take on the subject located in my special folder in My Documents.
Anyway, now would not be the time for finger pointing and play the blame game but instead we should move on from this issue. Funny how the Government constantly play up the date (and ironically, not so from the non-Government reps) by warning and threats of another May 13 hitting. This is a rather pathetic attempt in "forcing" unity when not many are even aware of the reasons for May 13 to even occur. If one would scour the mainstream media, May 13 will always be superficially referred to and even those in the know would not risk divulging too much regarding the incident lest they suffer consequences.
So, back to my point, I think it is futile now to even say so and so is responsible etc etc... What should be done is for the people to know what exactly May 13 was all about (minus the blame bang bang) and how we can learn from it. Then again, this is a futile wish as there are too many interested parties in power with their fingers in the pie with the stains of May 13 on their backs.
Perhaps the people can read up on the issue from the many books we have in our stores. Pick one up and enrich yourselves. Get an objective view of the incident. See all sides and then make your own conclusions. No one should tell us what that is. Our mind is ours alone. Never take anything at face value.
